Established by Art Incubator in early 2019, SHIRLOW STREET STUDIOS is a new multi-studio facility in the booming suburb of Marrickville, famed for its eclectic mix of arts studios, industrial workshops and boutique cafes. Featuring eight purpose-built creative studios and a communal area, SHIRLOW STREET STUDIOS offers Sydney-based visual artists a new opportunity to further their professional practice through subsidised rent and inclusive peer-support platforms, with career opportunities scheduled throughout the year.
Located within 4 minutes’ walk from Sydenham Station, the multi-studio is currently the creative home of emerging and established artists WILLIAM COOKE, CYBELE COX, STEVIE FIELDSEND, DAVID GRIGGS, PHILJAMES, MASON KIMBER, IZABELA PLUTA and TIM SILVER.
Working across painting, sculpture, photography, and installation, the eight artists are among the most dynamic and promising creatives working in Sydney today—with a combined portfolio of national and international exhibitions, institutional commissions and notable art prizes under their belts. Originally a food-processing factory, the warehouse was converted by Art Incubator into a multimodal suite of workspaces after its founders Teresa and Andre Biet noticed the lack of affordable and centralised arts studios in Sydney. The couple, who are avid art collectors, established Art Incubator in 2014 to provide financial support and mentorship for emerging artists.
To celebrate the launch of SHIRLOW STREET STUDIOS, Art Incubator and the eight resident artists opened their studio doors to the public for one day on Saturday 4 May. The program involved studio tours and meet & greets to give visitors a rare insight into their multifaceted practices. View open studios day images or read our Media Release for more information.
